Episode 9: there is no secret weapon

Craig Lane was the first dedicated sport scientist in the MLS with Minnesota United. His career has taken him on a wild ride from S&C intern at Boise State, all the way to Kinesiology Professor at St Thomas University & Boise State (full circle). In between there were some great opportunities that he had prepared to take advantage of and got to work at the highest levels of sport.

Episode Description

In this episode, Sam sits down with Craig Lane—former Major League Soccer (MLS) Sports Scientist for Minnesota United FC, former Western Hockey League (WHL) strength coach, and current exercise science professor at the University of St. Thomas and Boise State University.

Craig traces his career journey from growing up on the sidelines of Boise State football to training NHL-drafted prospects in the WHL, navigating the sudden COVID-19 season shutdown, and pivoting into sports science by teaching himself coding and statistics. He demystifies the rapidly growing world of sports technology, explaining why raw data from GPS trackers, heart rate monitors, and force plates is useless without narrative context, and why the true "secret sauce" of elite performance isn't a biohack—it's unyielding, fundamental consistency.

Craig also breaks down the fascinating neuroscience of sleep—including the glymphatic system's role in clearing brain waste—why high schools represent the next major frontier for sports performance coaches, and how letting go of the stereotyped "gruff, old-school coach" persona to embrace authentic leadership ("being a friend, not a buddy") completely transformed his career.

Key Takeaways You’ll Learn Inside the Episode:

  • Consistency Over Biohacks: Why searching for shortcuts or "secret weapons" fails, and why top-tier athletes at the MLS and NHL levels rely on relentless, foundational execution.

  • Translating Data into Stories: How sports science in the U.S. is evolving from overwhelming coaches with raw numbers to extracting actionable, statistical narratives.

  • The Glymphatic System & Sleep: The biological mechanism behind recovery—how cerebrospinal fluid cleanses metabolic waste from brain tissue during deep sleep cycles.

  • The High School Performance Frontier: Why the biggest growth sector and highest-impact opportunity in sports performance over the next decade will be at the high school level.

  • Authentic Coaching ("Friend, Not Buddy"): How shifting away from an artificial "gruff/mean" persona to an energetic, authentic style builds buy-in while maintaining strict standards.

  • Navigating Conflict with Emotional Maturity: How practicing humility and stepping back during heated misunderstandings preserves long-term staff relationships.

Memorable Quotes from Craig Lane:

"There's not a secret hack to these things. It takes a little bit of luck and consistency to develop your skill. There's not a trick to it."

"I'll be your friend, but I won't be your buddy. I'm not going to let you skip reps, I'm not going to let you walk out before you finish."

"If you really want to make an impact and a difference, work with high school athletes. Over a four-year period, you'll see a real difference that you made."
